Sal says Aaron Boone should call out Gleyber Torres for mental lapse: 'Enough with the babying'

Gleyber Torres inexplicably didn’t come off the second base bag to stop a throw from left fielder Billy McKinney following a leadoff single, and the ball rolled all the way into foul territory on the first base side, allowing Kike Hernandez to move to second base and score the eventual tying run.

Sal Licata couldn’t believe the gaffe by Torres, but had an even bigger problem with Aaron Boone not calling out Torres for the mistake after the game.

“Enough with the babying and the sugarcoating,” Sal said. “Are his poor feelings gonna get hurt for calling him out for making a bad play?

“‘We gotta be more careful in that situation.’ No, Gleyber’s gotta make that play. He’s gotta stop lollygagging and make that play. He’s gotta stop being an airhead.”

Sal is used to seeing that kind of public reaction from Buck Showalter and the Mets, and is tired of seeing players being protected so much by managers in the modern game. Sunday night was no exception.

“It’s not just Boone in that spot. Why are we mincing words in general?” Sal said. “Why are we mincing words with professional athletes? I was coached harder in little league than some of these guys are being coached in the major leagues! How is that possible?”
