Aaron Judge has mild hip strain, Yankees hope to make IL decision by Monday

Aaron Judge has a mild strain at the top of his right hip, and the Yankees hope to have a decision on whether or not he’ll need to go on the injured list by Monday.

Judge had an MRI on Friday, one day after leaving the Yankees’ opener in Texas after feeling “a little grab” in his hip. He sat out Friday’s game and was not in the lineup for Saturday’s game, and will likely sit out Sunday as well – a move that would allow the team to backdate a possible IL stint to Friday if it’s determined he needs at least a 10-day break.

“He’s doing better, but we’ll wait a couple days and pay attention here to see if this is something we want to take a 10-day (IL stint) on, or if he’ll be ready by Tuesday or Wednesday,” manager Aaron Boone said prior to Saturday’s game.

Boone did say Judge has “shown a lot of improvements” while getting treatment, and they’ll see where Judge is after Sunday’s series finale.

“The big thing will be that obviously, we don’t want to get into a situation where we hurt something further and put things in jeopardy further,” Boone said, “but right now we don’t feel like we have to make that decision quite yet.

Judge is hitting .261 with an .863 OPS, six home runs, and 14 RBI in 26 games this season.
