Aaron Judge loved what he saw from the Bronx crowd, which gave top prospect Anthony Volpe a warm welcome in his anticipated Yankees debut.
Judge and Volpe easily received the loudest ovations from the Yankee Stadium crowd when rosters were introduced before Thursday’s season opener, and Volpe received another raucous applause when he stepped in for his first big league at-bat.
After the win, Judge joked that the ovation for Volpe rivaled what he heard in the Bronx last year, when he was on the cusp of home run history.
“It was pretty cool getting to see Anthony Volpe’s reception there too, batting ninth,” Judge said. “I almost felt like he was chasing 62 there for his first at-bat, the way the crowd was. It was pretty special.”
Volpe drew a walk in his first at-bat, and immediately stole a base. He wasn’t able to get into the hit column, but he showed plenty of promise and earned rave reviews from manager Aaron Boone and his teammates after the convincing 5-0 victory.
Of course, Judge also received plenty of applause of his own, especially after he launched a home run to dead center in his first plate appearance of the season, and first as the Yankees captain.
