Aaron Judge is still sitting on 60 home runs, but refuses to expand his strike zone to get to the most illustrious record in Yankee history.
Judge walked four times on Tuesday night atop the order, working five full counts and continuing to get on base despite not leaving the park since last Tuesday night against the Pirates. For Judge, sticking with his approach has been surprisingly easy despite being on the cusp of history.
“Just trusting my teammates,” Judge said. “I know the guys behind me are going to get the job done. My ultimate goal is always to go out there and win the game. I’m not focused on the past or future, I’m focused on that I can do tonight in the box to help the team win.
“If it means taking a walk, hitting a base hit or a home run or whatever, I’m gonna go out there and do it. Just having that focus and the trust in my teammates, that’s what drives me day in and day out.”
Judge has still made plenty of loud contact over the past week, doubling twice in one game, flying out to the wall in dead center, or ripping a hard line drive right at Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman to kick off Tuesday’s game, but he hasn’t been able to put one over the wall. There have been some chances, but overall, Judge is still producing like the MVP candidate he has been all season.
“I thought he had some pitches to hit too, he fouled off some pitches, but his ability to lay off pitches out of the zone,” Aaron Boone said. “It's awesome to see the discipline that he's showing and the consistency of at-bats while he's going through this with all the attention around it.”
