Adam Warren among 22 players reassigned to minor-league camp by Yankees

Adam Warren will not be a Yankee on opening day.

While the Yankees went to Lakeland for a Friday matinee with the Tigers, Warren stayed behind in Tampa, one of 20 players the team re-assigned to their minor-league complex in the first round of spring cuts.

Also included in that group were OF Estevan Florial (optioned to Triple-A), 2020 first-round pick catcher Austin Wells (re-assigned to minor-league camp), 2019 Eastern League MVP 1B Chris Gittens, and 17 others:

Following Friday's game, the Yankees also re-assigned RHPs Reggie McClain and Addison Russ to minor-league camp.

Warren, 33, signed a minor-league deal this past winter, marking his fourth official stint with the Yankees. Originally a fourth-round pick in 2009, Warren debuted in 2012 and was with the team until Dec. 2015, when he was dealt to the Cubs for Starlin Castro. He returned at the 2016 trade deadline, sent back from Chicago in the Aroldis Chapman deal, but was dealt to Seattle at the 2018 deadline for international bonus money.

The right-hander signed with San Diego for 2019 but was lost mid-season after needing Tommy John surgery, and he signed a two-year minor-league deal with the Yankees that winter. He was released last July when roster spots became scarce because of rule changes for the truncated 2020 season, but re-signed a new deal this winter.

Over his career with the Yankees, Warren is 20-20 with a 3.18 ERA and six saves in 407 innings over 249 games (20 starts). He has not had the same success outside New York – some have turned it into a meme of sorts – posting a 5.91 ERA in Chicago, 3.74 ERA in Seattle, and 5.34 ERA in San Diego.
