Anthony Volpe 'completely blacked out' during first career home run

Long before the Yankees coughed up a frustrating loss to the Twins, Anthony Volpe got things started on a much different foot, leading off the bottom of the first by blasting his first career home run.

It has been a struggle for Volpe at the plate to begin his MLB career, but on Friday night, he rounded the bases while the Yankee Stadium fans erupted to celebrate their hopeful future star depositing the first of (hopefully) many into the left field seats.

Volpe didn’t get to take in much of the response from the crowd, as he told reporters after the game when asked what was going through his mind as the ball left the park.

“Nothing,” Volpe laughed. “I just completely blacked out.”

What stuck out most to Volpe was the players around him that he got to share the moment with, especially his captain, who launched a home run immediately after Volpe to add to the already unforgettable moment.

“I think kind of just how it happened and [Aaron] Judge going back-to-back,” Volpe said when asked what he would remember most about the home run. “But I think more just how great of teammates I'm fortunate enough to play with over the last couple of weeks. So many guys have had so many conversations about hitting and different stuff like that. They're so knowledgeable and experienced about the game…just super fortunate to be on this team and be surrounded by this group of guys.

“It was a pretty special moment that I got to share with the rest of the guys. That’s what made it super special. I don't think it really sunk in until an inning or two later.”
