Hyped Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez was assigned to minor league camp on Thursday, but the team’s top prospect still remains with the big leaguers, and manager Aaron Boone says it could stay that way.
Appearing on Foul Territory, Boone said that Anthony Volpe, who has been tearing it up in spring training, is still “very much” in the conversation to break camp on the major league roster.
“Volpe is very much in the running to be on the team on Opening Day,” Boone said. “Those conversations will start to happen in earnest. He’s been awesome.”
Volpe, 21, holds a 1.126 OPS this spring while flashing plenty of leather at shortstop. He has only played in 22 games at Triple-A, but top prospects have been skipping that level altogether in recent years, including last year’s Rookie of the Years in Julio Rodriguez and Michael Harris. So, it seems as if the Yanks will consider Volpe as long as he is performing, which he certainly has been this spring.
“He’s come in as one of the big stories of this camp, and come out and delivered, and looked like everything we’ve been excited about him being,” Boone said. “He’s very much in the running.”
