Aaron Judge told Anthony Volpe to have something ready for the Bleacher Creatures when his name was chanted for his first ever roll call, so Volpe decided to honor the Yankee captain.
As the fans in the right field bleachers chanted the 21-year-old’s name in the top of the first, Volpe waved to the crowd while clutching and kissing the interlocking NY on the front of his pinstriped jersey, which Judge did after hitting a home run in game five of the ALDS last year.
The Bronx crowd, and fans watching from home, loved the gesture from Volpe, who grew up in nearby New Jersey in a household full of big Yankee fans, including himself. On Thursday, he became the youngest Yankee to start at shortstop on Opening Day since Derek Jeter in 1996.
