Anthony Volpe was among the Yankees to travel to Mexico City for their two-game exhibition series with Diablos Rojos, and he made sure to check in with an idol and former Yankee after Monday night’s game.
The Yankee shortstop went over to the Diablos Rojos dugout to share a moment with Robinson Cano, and the two did a jersey swap and shared a moment on the field before the Yanks headed to Houston to prepare for their season opener.
When Volpe was growing up a Yankee fan in New Jersey, Cano was rising to stardom in pinstripes as Derek Jeter’s double play partner, winning a World Series in the Bronx in 2009 while becoming one of the best second baseman in all of baseball.
Volpe is looking for a similar ascent as a homegrown Yankee, and is set to begin his sophomore season in the major leagues starting Thursday.
