Anthony Volpe is reportedly taking the number of a fellow homegrown Yankee.
According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the top prospect will wear No. 11 on Opening Day for his pinstriped debut, the first to wear that number since the beloved Brett Gardner played his final game in 2021.
Volpe wore number 77 in spring training, but will be switching it up to Gardner’s old number when he plays his first game as a Yankee that counts on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx.
The 21-year-old joins Yankees like Gary Sheffield, Buck Showalter, Dwight Gooden, Lefty Gomez, Chuck Knoblauch, and Herb Pennock as memorable players that wore No. 11.
