Gio was already fed up with the MLB postseason schedule that gave the Yankees a day off before Game 1 and another before Game 2 – and that was before Thursday’s game was postponed, meaning two days off between Games 1 and 2 and possibly four games in a row in three cities from Friday-Monday.
“Now you’re talking about having back-to-back games, with travel, twice in this series,” Gio said about a possible five-game series.
But when Boomer said during Thursday’s show that the Yankees should be slapping the Guardians around and could’ve won Game 1 by a much bigger margin, well, Gio just wants to move ahead to next Wednesday already?
“I wonder if the Yankees fan feels that way, that they’re just going to smack the Guardians around,” Gio said. “Why even play the games, now that I think about it. Just put the Yankees in the ALCS now, especially with this weather; the Guardians aren’t winning here, so let’s just move right on.”
Of course, you have to play the schedule, as Boomer noted, and with every game the rest of the way back-to-back, anything could happen. In theory, anyway, because the Yankees can now use Cortes, Severino, and Cole in Games 2-4 and hope to not even get to Monday.
Booms doesn’t think that will be a problem.
“This I feel is just preseason baseball for the Yankees,” Boomer said. “You throw the bats and balls out there, hit a couple homers, and call it a day, because that’s what it’s all about right now. Let's get through this stuff and get to the real series."
Gio asked if Boomer was serious, and, well, of course he was.
“That’s what it feels like to me. You’re talking about one of the lightest-hitting teams left in the playoffs,” Boomer said, and then defended Nestor Cortes when Gio mentioned Shane Bieber pitching Game 2: “Who was the Yankees’ best pitcher, and which lineup would you rather face?”
Gio chastised Boomer, saying “all of your touch the money rules are out the window for the Yankees,” but even Mr. Giannotti, who won’t watch any more non-New York baseball this year, agrees that it’s really all about a third Yankees-Astros ALCS.
“I expect to see them in the ALCS, and this is the year that they have to get through Houston,” Gio said. “They cannot go down again to the Astros in the ALCS, like they did in 2017 and 2019. Everything is set up for them to succeed.”
