Aaron Judge became just the fourth player in Yankees history to hit two home runs and walk three times in the same game, but all the talk after his monster performance on Monday night was about where he was glancing before he hit his second homer.
In a video that quickly went viral, Blue Jays broadcasters wondered aloud why Judge continued to glance over towards first base while he was in the box in the eighth inning.
“Where’s he looking? And he did it more than once,” Dan Shulman said. “You don’t want to go throwing allegations around without knowing, but…”
Just two pitches later, Judge demolished a hanging slider 462 feet to dead center, and the discussion about where Judge was peeking in between pitches continued.
“He’s looking at something, then the next move is that powerful swing, and he blasts one to center field,” Toronto TV analyst Buck Martinez said. “I’ve not seen that before with him. I’ve not ever seen that.”
After the game, both Judge and Aaron Boone were asked about the glances, and both said it was Judge peeking over toward his own dugout, trying to see who was “chirping” at the umpires, as Boone had just been tossed in that at-bat after a low strike was called on Judge, and Judge didn’t like his teammates continuing to chirp at the umpires despite the Yanks holding a commanding 6-0 lead in the eighth inning.
