The Yankees lost again on Tuesday, and their chances of making a run to get into the playoffs are nearing zero.
With that in mind, Boomer and Gio agree that it’s time to start prioritizing Aaron Judge’s long-term health.
“He obviously isn’t 100 percent…he’s favoring it, he’s limping,” Boomer said. “Ultimately, they’re gonna shut him down.
“This is no joke. This is something that helps him balance. He’s playing the outfield, he’s running the bases…he’s giving it everything he can to be out there…like Anthony Rizzo. Unfortunately, the performance speaks to what these guys are dealing with.”
While Boomer says “it’s getting there” in terms of Judge needing to be shut down for the year, Gio says that time has already arrived, and the Yanks should be more proactive like the Mets were at the deadline, acknowledging their lack of chance to make a run, and prioritizing future success.
“The time is now to do that,” Gio said. “Six and a half games out, .500 record, the time is now.”
Aaron Boone told reporters Tuesday night that Judge likely won’t need offseason surgery, so the injured toe could be responding well to Judge playing again, which could make shutting him down difficult, as Judge could push back on the idea.
“The other thing too will be whether or not Judge will be down with that,” Boomer said. “He may want to go down with the ship. He’s the captain.”
