'Boomer And Gio': Hats Off To Brian Cashman For Adding Gio Urshela, DJ LeMahieu

By WFAN.com

Brian Cashman has worked his magic again.

After Gio Urshela and DJ LeMahieu fueled the Bombers' ninth-inning rally to beat the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, WFAN's Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti sang the Yankees GM's praises for adding the two infielders.

"Brian Cashman deserves a silver star, he really does," Esiason said on Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show. "I mean, all these guys. And when you think about the Cleveland Indians allowing Urshela to leave, and they've got to be sick to their stomach 'cause they can't score a run now."

The Yankees trailed Seattle 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth. Then Urshela hit a two-run homer off Anthony Swarzak to tie the game before LeMahieu delivered the game-winning single off Roenis Elias that scored Cameron Maybin.

"The Yankees' magical season with a bunch of no-names continues," Esiason said.

Ushela, acquired in an August 2018 trade with the Blue Jays, is hitting .360 with two homers and nine RBIs.

"You know what I love about what Urshela is doing?" Esiason said. "Urshela is basically getting an opportunity because somebody got hurt -- (Miguel) Andujar gets hurt. And ... I've been saying this for years: When you get your opportunity, you've got to make the most out of it. You've got to seize the moment. And it's unfortunate at the feet of somebody who's gotten hurt, but you've got to be happy for this kid. And you've got to be really happy for what Brian Cashman found here. This is what you call a buffed diamond in the rough."

Added Gregg Giannotti, Esiason's co-host: "It's great to have a guy who steps up, can contribute offensively but also is a lock-down third baseman, which is something that, as great as Miguel Andujar was last year, we know that he struggled defensively, so you're basically getting an upgrade over there at third base as well. So hats off to Brian Cashman and those guys."

Meanwhile, LeMahieu, who was signed as a free agent in January, is batting .330 with one homer and 19 RBIs.

"So far, DJ LeMahieu, you could make a case, has been the Yankees' MVP," Giannotti said. "(Luke) Voit's been great, too, but you can make a case for LeMahieu because the two games that he wasn't there were the two worst offensive games. He's one of three players who have carried this Yankees team more than the others: Voit, Urshela and LeMahieu."
