Angel Hernandez was once again under heavy scrutiny on Sunday after Gleyber Torres took exception to Bowden Francis stepping off the mound and immediately back on before throwing a pitch that was called strike three in the first inning.
Torres and the Yankees argued that the pitch clock should have reset, but after the umpires gathered to talk, they withheld Hernandez’s ruling (which was also a missed call as the pitch was well above the strike zone). Gio was hardly surprised given Hernandez’s track record in the majors.
Nor was he surprised that Yankees starter Luis Gil was “showing up” Hernandez when he wasn’t getting strike calls himself.
“He was showing him up big time,” Gio said. “II can’t blame Luis Gil doing that, because he is the worst official/umpire/ref in the history of the sports universe.
“He’s been responsible for all kinds of crap all over the diamond.
First base, third base, he’s the worst.”
Hernandez was ripped on social media on Sunday during the Yankees series finale, and Boomer agrees that it was deserved.
“You can’t make as many mistakes as he makes without thinking that there’s something else going on,” Boomer said. “I’m sorry. He’s either blind - he has no place being on a Major League Baseball field.”
