Giancarlo Stanton scored from first base on a double by Anthony Rizzo in the first inning of Sunday’s win, though a good relay throw may have nabbed the Yankee slugger at the plate.
Stanton looked to be in a noticeable jog as he rounded third, looking to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead, and Boomer and Gio couldn’t believe the lack of hustle on a close play.
“I just thought he was really slow and maybe not healthy,” Gio said. “Maybe the Yankees told him not to run fast because they’re afraid he’s gonna pull a muscle.
“This is the slowest I’ve ever seen a man run around third base when there is a chance for a play at the plate. It was like he had ankle weights on…it’s pathetic.”
Boomer wasn’t a fan of it either, and says regardless of Stanton’s injury history, there has to be more effort than that.
“It’s embarrassing,” Boomer said. “They’re Major League Baseball players. They’re making a lot of money…as an ex-athlete, I try to understand, but even I don’t understand why a guy would be jogging on a baseball field.”
