Boomer & Gio: Will Yankees have to eventually move Clay Holmes out of closer role?

The Yankees fought for another narrow victory on Wednesday to take the road series from the defending NL champion Diamondbacks, but not before a two-run lead was squandered in the 10th inning.

Boomer wonders if there should be any concern about closer Clay Holmes, who allowed three runs (none earned) in that 10th inning to extend the game to the 11th. Holmes has now allowed six hits in 4.1 innings on the young season, and Boomer says there could come a time soon where the Yanks might need to ponder making a change in the bullpen.

But that time might not be yet given how well things are going for the team as a whole to start the season.

“That’s kind of the one thing,” Boomer said. “I would think they’ll give him some leash and let him work through all this stuff.”

Gio agreed that, eventually, the Yanks will have to make a change if Holmes continues to allow traffic on the basepaths. But that time is not now.

“If this continues, the Yankees are going to have to find another closer if they want to win a World Series,” Gio said. “But these guys in the bullpen are so up and down throughout the year. So yes, there’s some concern, but I’m not ready to give up on him.”
