Jerry has been clear in his hesitancy to sign free agents to big contracts, and he wonders if there is soon to be a regret from the Yankees for inking Aaron Judge to a record $360 million deal this past offseason.
Judge was putting up numbers similar to his historic 62 home run campaign in 2022 before injuring his toe back in June, but as he ages and potentially faces more injuries, Jerry wonders if it will become a contract that fans crush, like Giancarlo Stanton.
“Do you think in six years from now, we’re killing the Judge contract?” Jerry asked Boomer. “I think on the back end of these contracts, that’s exactly what we do here. I agree with the caller. Somehow, some way, we have to get away from these ridiculous long-term deals.”
Boomer didn’t hesitate in shooting down that idea, and that Judge deserved what he was paid.
“Long term, he’s gonna be fine,” Boomer said. “The Yankees are worth $7 billion. I don’t want to hear it. these guys wait a long time in baseball to get these big contracts. Aaron Judge had to wait, wait, and wait, and he had to prove himself.”
Still, it is a sizeable investment for a franchise to make, and Jerry understands any pause general managers have in signing long-term deals to players nearing 30 years old.
“That’s exactly the point I’m trying to make. You go be a GM. It’s not easy,” Jerry said. “These decisions are really difficult. A lot of them make sense at the time and don’t work out. Some don’t make sense at the time, and they do work out, and you look like a genius. It’s not an easy job.”
