The Yankees have bolstered their rotation by signing Carlos Rodon, and Gio is confident that the All-Star lefty is built to thrive on the Bronx stage, unlike many high-profile pitchers that have withered after arriving in New York.
“I don’t think there’s anybody that’s going to have a problem with bringing in Rodon,” Gio said. “There’s a lot about Rodon that you already know that makes you feel like the Bronx is not going to break him down…he wanted to be here. Not just for the money. He wanted this stage.”
But, the Yankees still haven’t addressed the offense, which was nonexistent in an ALCS sweep at the hands of the Astros. So Gio still has his concerns about the lineup, even though the rotation is now among the best in baseball.
“I know they’re trying to get rid of Donaldson and Aaron Hicks,” Gio said. “I know Brian Cashman is trying to be creative in the trade market and shake things up, but so far, he hasn’t been able to do that. This definitely makes the offseason feel a lot better…now you feel like you have a staff that can go against any in the American League.
“But do they have the lineup that’s going to get after the Astros rotation and will the guys that you need to perform in October perform? That’s still a question that’s up there.”
What can the Yanks do to address that question? Gio would like to see a reunion with Andrew Benintendi, who started to find his way in pinstripes just before a hand injury ended his season in 2022.
“I think Benintendi is the perfect kind of player for the Yankees,” Gio said. “I’d like to see him come back.”
