Boomer particularly rooting for Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman in World Series
Boomer Esiason believes the Yankees will win the World Series in seven games, and bring the Bronx its first championship in 15 years.
If it happens, Boomer says he will be particularly happy for two people: Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman, who he believes have been the target of rampant criticism, often unfairly, for years now.
“People are just eviscerating them all summer long,” Boomer said. “Much like Steve Cohen and David Stearns came out and said they believe in this team, and we were wondering if they said that to keep the ticket sales going, and they ended up supporting the team…at the same time, the Yankee fans were eviscerating the manager and GM.”
Fans have been outwardly critical of this leadership regime as several playoff runs ended far too early, but now, they are finally in the Fall Classic, Boone for the first time as manager and Cashman for the first time since 2009. If the Yanks were able to finish the job, it would be Cashman’s fifth title as GM, and Gio believes it would be the sweetest because of the criticism he has faced.
“This would be probably be the one that was most special to him,” Gio said. “Before the season, he was down at the owners meetings firing back, getting pissed off and challenging everybody. For his team to back that up…and win it on top of that? That would be the ultimate ‘up your ass’ situation.”
