Aaron Boone was ripped by Yankee fans for taking out a cruising Domingo German in the ninth inning with a 2-0 lead, but Boomer pointed out how the pitcher Boone brought in should have gotten the job done.
Had Clay Holmes not fumbled a comebacker to the mound, Boomer very likely would have been talking about a much-needed Yankee win rather than a devastating 3-2 loss.
“So, Holmes comes in…he induced a weak grounder,” Boomer said. “That’s what his job is to do.
“When guys come in and don’t get the job done, then obviously it falls back on the manager. But it wasn’t like Clay Holmes came in and gave up a grand slam or anything. Holmes has got to make that play.”
Gio still felt like Boone should have stuck with German, who was at just 88 pitches, but Boomer wanted to make sure the criticism was fair, given the fact that Holmes likely would have done his job if he had just fielded the weak grounder.
