Boomer: Yankees can't pay Juan Soto more than Aaron Judge, which is why he'll leave

After Juan Soto’s three-homer night on Tuesday, the “blank check” and “pay that man” comments once again surfaced across Yankee Universe, as fans clamored for the superstar to be signed to a long-term deal to keep Soto paired with Aaron Judge for the long haul.

But Boomer doesn’t believe that will happen, mainly because of the presence of Judge and his $360 million contract that he signed after his historic 2022 season.

“The Yankees can’t pay him more than Aaron Judge,” Boomer said. “That’s why I don’t think he’s gonna be here.”

Judge, the Yankee captain, is having an even better season than his new teammate Soto, as he continues a run as arguably the best hitter in all of baseball. Nothing he has portrayed has suggested that he would take issue with Soto making more money, and Soto getting a bigger payday would make sense given his unprecedented age hitting free agency (he is still just 25 years old) and his durability. But Boomer believes other teams are in line to outbid the Yanks, who he says will be reluctant to offer more than what they paid their face of the franchise.

“I don’t know about San Diego, because they lost their owner. He was the one spending all that money, and he sadly passed away,” Boomer said. “Could it be the Red Sox? The Giants?

“If you’re the Mets, you can see them taking a run. They have to.”

Gio is also skeptical of the Yanks signing Soto, though not because of concerns of the optics of paying him more than their homegrown superstar and captain.

“They’ve got Stanton, Cole, and Judge still,” Gio said. “You’re gonna add another $50 million player in a luxury tax era?”
