Boomer: Yankees fans overlooking team's injuries when criticizing 2022 roster

Brandon Tierney expressed plenty of frustration on Wednesday when talking about the Yankees’ failure to improve last year’s roster so far this offseason, with their two big moves being the signings of Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo, who were both already a part of last year’s group.

But Boomer Esiason wants to remind everyone that Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone are not wrong when they bring up the untimely injuries that hit the team just before their playoff run.

“When they got to the playoffs, what happened to them?” Boomer said. “What happened to their roster? Their bullpen got decimated.

“At the end of the day…there is a lot of teams out there that were sailing right along and all of a sudden, these injuries pop up. For the Yankees, two of their best hitters that you would have been counting on, would have been right in the middle of that lineup, weren’t there…and they were missing half their bullpen.”

Andrew Benintendi and DJ LeMahieu were key bats missing from the lineup, while the bullpen was missing critical arms in Michael King, Chad Green, and Ron Marinaccio. Still, the Yankees looked overmatched in an ALCS sweep at the hands of the eventual World Series champion Astros, though Boomer believes it could have been a much different series if the Yanks were at full strength.

“I’m just wondering if…anybody ever takes into account how many injuries the Yankees suffered from,” Boomer said.
