Boomer: Yankees have a 'major, major' problem in back end of bullpen

Clay Holmes blew his 10th save of the year on Sunday night, his ninth blown save in his last 22 opportunities.

For Boomer, the closer spot had already been a problem for the Yankees, but the past few weeks of Holmes struggling to shut the door has only reinforced the fact that the Bombers have a big issue that could come back to bite them in October.

“We’ve been saying it all year, more so now in the last six weeks,” Boomer said. “They have a major, major, back end of the bullpen problem.”

Aaron Boone said after the game that Holmes is the team’s closer, so it likely will still be the righty on the mound in the ninth inning moving forward. That hardly gives Boomer a sense of security for the Yankees, who have problems beyond Holmes in the bullpen as well, but right now, Holmes is the most glaring issue.

“Man, he’s blown 10 saves,” Boomer said. “Think about where they would be if he just did his job half the time.”
