Aaron Boone didn’t care much for the days leading up to Aaron Judge signing with the Yankees on a nine-year deal.
But on Wednesday, with Judge officially putting the pinstripes back on at Wednesday’s press conference, Boone was able to exhale with his superstar back in the Bronx for the rest of his career.
“There were certainly some tense moments on my end leading up to this day,” Boone said. “This is a great, great day to be a Yankee.”
Just how tense was it?
“That feeling if you lost your cellphone, your keys, your wallet, and your iPad, gone,” Boone said. “And the next morning, someone knocks on the door and says, ‘Were you looking for this?’”
Having survived the stress and uncertainty that came at the Winter Meetings, with Judge reportedly going to the Giants before that report was quickly retracted, Boone was now able to wear nothing but smiles at Wednesday’s press conference, having found his phone, iPad, keys, and his team’s biggest star.
“We got our guy,” Boone said. “When you sign a player to this kind of a deal, and for this long of a time, obviously we’re talking about a great player between the lines, and one of the great two-way players in our game. But what I really appreciate is who he is in our room…and who he is as a teammate and as a person.
“When you see him go through a season like he just went through…pay attention to how everyone reacts to it. Pay attention to how his teammates react to him…that’s because of the way he delivers every day with who he is.”
