BT has been critical of Gleyber Torres in recent years, especially this season, as he has underperformed in a contract year, made a plethora of errors in the field, and now has a benching under his belt after not running out a single off the wall on Friday night.
But on Monday, BT turned his attention to Aaron Boone and the Yankees organization as culprits in what has happened to the former top prospect.
“Absolutely culpable for creating this culture of acceptance when it comes to Gleyber Torres,” BT said. “He doesn’t run all the time, he’s half asleep on the bases…to me, the Yankees culture, they failed him, and it’s too late.
“It’s like if you’re loose with your parenting. You let your kid do whatever they want, good luck when they get to high school and college…and having them show restraint and measure and respect when it’s time to do that, if you’re letting them do whatever the heck they want when they’re 4-5 years old.”
Torres was looking like a superstar in the making to begin his career, earning All-Star nods in his first two seasons while hitting 38 home runs in 2019. But it has been downhill since, and BT says the culture the Yanks created around him played a role in his decline.
“The Yankees have just enabled him. There were never any repercussions,” BT said. “I would have pulled him from the field years ago, and I wouldn’t have played him the next day. That is definitely one big ‘X’ in the Boone column.
“There was a point where Gleyber Torres was young, ascending, and impressionable, and if they would have drilled him just a little differently…it’s not inconceivable that his number would have been retired…he was a masher as a second baseman. They just let him mess around, goof around, not locked in, no penalty. That’s on the Yankees.”
