Sal Licata began Thursday’s show asking for at least some of the blame to be directed at Aaron Judge for the Yankees continuing to fall short of their goals, but BT was not willing to give the captain any shred of blame.
“The Yankees have failed Aaron Judge,” BT said. “For years, we lamented how the Knicks failed [Patrick] Ewing and never got him that second superstar…the Yankees have failed Aaron Judge.
“Instead of playing with Bernie, Tino, Mo, Posada, and Pettitte, let’s say Derek Jeter played with Steve Sax at second base, Randy Velarde, Scott Sanderson, and Jim Leyritz in left field. Are we even talking about Jeter? The answer is no.”
BT believes the Yankees failing Judge dates back to his rookie season, when a surprising trip to the ALCS preceded a 2018 campaign in which the team cut payroll, even with the acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton, and have made a litany of questionable moves since. Judge is the face of the franchise, and even though he’s the leader and the captain, it doesn’t mean he deserves blame for performing like a superstar while the rest of the poorly-constructed team fails to shoulder any of the weight.
“Aaron Judge is the best player in baseball when healthy…without Aaron Judge, the Yankees are a step above the A’s,” BT said. “If we can agree on that, and I think we can, you think we should drop this at Aaron Judge’s doorstep?”
