The Yankees are finally getting set to take on the Red Sox for the first time this season, but BT isn’t feeling any anticipation about the upcoming three-game set.
“Any juice you conjure up is fairly contrived,” BT said. “What juice? It just feels like three more games.
“I miss it. That was a really fun period. You go back to those battles, it was intense.”
New York and Boston used to be an event 19 times a year, peaking in the 2003-2006 range when both teams were consistently competing for titles, even meeting in the ALCS two years in a row. There have been seasons between then and now when that level of intensity has returned, but lately, the rivalry has cooled considerably.
The Red Sox were a last place team in 2022, and are back in the AL East basement this season, having lost seven of their last 10 games. Meanwhile, other divisional rivals like the Rays and Blue Jays have emerged as consistent playoff teams, pushing Boston aside on the competitive totem pole.
Of course, there’s also the Yankees’ recent ALCS tormentors as well.
“It’s the Astros,” BT said when Tiki asked who the Bombers’ new top rival is. “When they steal a World Series from you, you don’t forget that…definitely the Astros and the Rays.”
