Brian Cashman 'suspects' Aaron Hicks will be Yankees starting left fielder

As Opening Day draws closer, and the Yankees don’t make a move for a new outfielder, the reality is setting in that Aaron Hicks will likely be the starting left field when the Bombers open the season in two months.

General manager Brian Cashman all but confirmed that on MLB Network Radio on Monday.

“I suspect he will be the guy that emerges,” Cashman said, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “Because he's still really talented and everything's there.”

Hicks, much maligned by the Yankee fanbase after another season of struggles in 2022, hit just .216 with eight home runs after setting a preseason goal for himself of joining the 30/30 club. His struggles at the plate bled into his defense last season as well, and his season ended with an injury in the ALDS while chasing down a fly ball.

The Yanks were potentially seen as a trade candidate for Pirates All-Star Bryan Reynolds, but the asking price is reportedly sky high, and the team appears set to try it again with Hicks, who is signed through 2025.
