Brian Cashman told reporters on Thursday that there have been no contract extension talks with Gleyber Torres, who is slated to reach free agency for the first time in his career at the end of the 2024 season.

“He’s our second baseman for this year,” Cashman said. “Haven’t had any conversations about anything past that.”

Torres has been involved in trade rumors for years, but has remained a Yankee since making his big-league debut in 2018. If you take Cashman at his words that Torres is the Bombers’ second baseman “for this year,” it’s unlikely he will be dealt, at least not where the Yanks seem to stand at this moment.

Torres appeared to be on the fast track to superstardom after following up a strong rookie season with a 38-homer campaign in 2019, but he took a step back in 2020 and 2021. Last season, he put together a productive season with an even .800 OPS while hitting 25 home runs as the Yankees’ top offensive producer not named Aaron Judge.

Whether the 27-year-old could sign an extension during the season, Cashman didn’t give anything away.

“Who knows? I don’t know,” Cashman said. “As of right now there hasn’t been any discussions on that.”
