DJ LeMahieu is still recovering from a foot injury that sidelined him for the entire postseason, and one that sapped him of his power in the second half of the season, but Brian Cashman told the YES Network on Monday that it looks like the veteran infielder will not undergo surgery.
“Right now, in this part of the winter, it looks optimistic that we’re gonna try to avoid surgery,” Cashman said. “He’s feeling really good. It’s still early, so I’m not saying he’s out of the woods in any way, shape or form, but he’s responded really well to the rest, and he’s putting himself through physical activity and testing right now, and he’s responding well to that, whether it’s running, hitting, fielding his position.”
LeMahieu, who suffered an injury that derailed the end of his season for the second straight year, is currently working out in Tampa, and continues to report good news, as surgery at this point would likely jeopardize his ability to be ready for the start of spring training.
“Fingers crossed that we can avoid surgery, fingers crossed that this heals on its own in time, and if that’s the case, we’re obviously getting a great player back,” Cashman said. “We know what DJ LeMahieu means to us and what we can be.”
