Brian Cashman on other moves before Opening Day: 'We're prepared to go with what we have here'

The Yankees roster still has some question marks with less than two weeks to go until Opening Day, including within the starting rotation, where Domingo German has landed on the 60-day IL and Luis Severino tries to regain his form after battling injuries since 2019.

Those question marks could be addressed with some help from the A’s who are undergoing a fire sale and still have starters Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas reportedly on the trading block. But if the right package doesn’t surface, general manager Brian Cashman says he is confident going into the season with the roster as currently constructed.

“As I've said, we've stayed in touch and engaged a lot of clubs about what our needs seem to be right now and if something comes out of any of those discussions, great,” Cashman told reporters on Saturday. “If not, we're prepared to go with what we have here.”

Cashman and the front office have received plenty of criticism this offseason, as they have declined to aggressively pursue star free agents in positions of need like Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, or Freddie Freeman. Multiple reports indicated that the Yankees did not seriously consider those options because of payroll or budget, but again, Cashman pointed towards the team’s already high payroll, while others counter that their payroll increase doesn’t align with their revenue climb.

“All I’d say is we have the highest payroll in the history of this franchise and that’s because our ownership is massively committed to trying to field a winner in this city for this fanbase,” Cashman said.
