Brian Cashman set to return as Yankees GM in 2023: Report

Brian Cashman’s contract as Yankees general manager expires at the end of this season, but he reportedly isn’t going anywhere.

According to Sportico, the longest-tenured GM in Major League Baseball is set to extend that label, as Barry M. Bloom says Cashman has already agreed to return next season.

The Yankees almost never announce such extensions during the season, so one could be expected shortly after the end of the 2022 campaign, which has seen the highest of highs, like the Yanks running out to a record that rivaled the 1998 team’s pace, and some low lows, like the Bombers playing sub-.500 ball for six weeks while posting the worst record in baseball through the first two weeks of August.

Cashman has received his share of criticism for the Yankees’ seemingly lackluster offseason, which included the additions of Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, neither of whom have produced much offensively in 2022, and the acquisition of Jose Trevino, who has been the best defensive catcher in baseball while adding a surprising level of offensive production.

Cashman has struck gold in some trades like Luke Voit, Didi Gregorius, and Clay Holmes before his recent struggles, but has already been criticized for the Frankie Montas trade at the deadline while the Mariners grabbed Luis Castillo.

Nevertheless, Hal Steinbrenner has consistently praised the job Cashman has done since taking over the GM role in 1998, and it appears he will continue to hold that seat.
