The Yankees are red hot entering an important series against the upstart Orioles, and Sal Licata says the Bombers are beginning to show why Brian Cashman was right about the team he constructed.
“Cashman was right when he said ‘Don’t count us out,’” Sal said.
Cashman made those comments when the Bombers were banged up and fading fast in the AL East, thanks in part to the Rays getting off to a historic start to the season. Now, as Tampa has fallen back down to earth a bit, the Yanks are only six games back in the division.
“Heading into that series in Tampa, they were in danger of falling 12 games out of first place,” Sal said. “But they showed me something, and they built off of that, and now, forget it. Now they’re clicking on all cylinders.
“I really believe the Yankees are the best team in the American League, and maybe the best team in all of baseball, and they’re going to get better.”
Will the Yankees be able to fulfill Sal’s belief and finally get over the hump and into the World Series? Sal says certain things will have to go right, and he believes it will.
“Is Judge going to do what he has done in the regular season last year and this year, and what he did in Toronto?” Sal said. “Is he going to be able to carry his team to a World Series? I think he will.”
