Sal Licata refuses to count the Yankees out, mainly because he is convinced Brian Cashman will refuse to let them slide out of the race and miss the playoffs entirely.
So, with the trade deadline less than two weeks away, Sal expects the Yankees GM to be very active on the phones, adding pieces to ensure the Yanks pick things up down the stretch.
“Brian Cashman…the one thing you cannot dispute is that he will try to improve this team at all cost,” Sal said. “It happens every year.
“Sometimes, I find myself thinking, ‘How the hell did he do it?’”
Admittedly, some recent deadline acquisitions have not worked out at all for Cashman, as last season saw deadline additions Frankie Montas, Scott Effross, and Andrew Benintendi all go down with injuries, and Lou Trivino will miss the entire 2023 season. Still, Sal says Yankee fans should take comfort in the fact that Cashman is always active and ready to fill the voids within his roster for the stretch run.
“A lot of it, in recent years, has ended in disappointment, but I do know for sure that Brian Cashman has been working on improving this ballclub in any way he can,” Sal said. “And he will improve this club however he can, or at least try.”
