Both BT and Sal agree that when the Yankees have been at their best, they have a deep bench of contributors that know their role and produce when their number is called.

So, one caller posed the possibility of a veteran and future Hall of Famer potentially signing with New York in a bench role.

How about Joey Votto in pinstripes for his age 40 season?

“I’d take him,” BT said. “But he’s not coming to sit on the bench. But I’d take him.

“I haven’t thought of Votto. I don’t know if he still wants to play or if he’d be open to playing twice a week, but I’d be into that.”

Votto, 40, is a free agent after spending nearly two decades with the Reds. Shoulder issues sapped him of much of his offensive production over the last two seasons, but in 2021, he smashed 36 home runs while continuing to be one of the best in baseball at drawing walks. If he is open to a diminished role, BT would welcome him aboard.

“When the Yankees were rocking, they had a Darryl [Strawberry], they had a Ruben Sierra, Cecil Fielder when he wasn’t playing…they just had guys you could go to,” BT said. “Vets. They need that.”
