Brandon Tierney believes the Yankees have a big problem.
Most World Series teams need a bonafide ace to lead their staff, and after Wednesday’s first-inning implosion by Gerrit Cole, BT fears that they Yankees don’t have that luxury as October draws closer.
“Gerrit Cole, do we trust this? We don’t trust this,” BT said. “Maybe [Frankie] Montas will become that guy. Do we trust [Jameson] Taillon? He ain’t even getting the ball. [Jordan] Montgomery is in St. Louis, [Domingo] German stinks, and [Luis] Severino is hurt.
“The Yankees have the unenviable task of trying to win a World Series without an ace. I’m not saying that never happens, but that usually does not happen. The last time the Yankees won a World Series, they had an ace. His name was CC Sabathia. All the other previous iterations of championship teams…they all had monster stones. Clemens, Pettitte, Wells…El Duque.”
Cole has allowed five runs in each of his last two starts, and while he has shown spurts of the dominance he displayed in Houston while leading an Astros team to the World Series in 2019, there has also been the numerous hiccups along the way, which could derail a season if it happens in a postseason series.
With that in mind, it’s hard to convince BT that Yankee fans should feel good about Gerrit Cole taking the ball in game one of a playoff series.
“You got this guy out there who’s thinking, mentally fidgeting, who’s giving you these long excuses,” BT said. “He doesn’t look fully comfortable.
“If there is one thing that goes awry, his process comes crumbling down. That’s a problem, because he’s not your third pitcher, he’s not your fourth pitcher, he’s your ‘ace.’”
