BT: Hype around some key Yankees prospects seems to have been 'exaggerated'

The Yankees have stood pat in recent winters when it came to signing big-name free agents, electing to keep space open for their prized prospects that were rising up the minor league ranks.

The only problem? BT doesn’t think any outside of Anthony Volpe have shown real potential to contribute to an offense that has a bleak outlook moving forward.

“Volpe is going to be a star,” BT said. “The other kids? I don’t know.

“[Oswald] Peraza can field, but is he gonna hit? [Oswaldo] Cabrera is versatile, but can he hit?”

We’ve seen it in the past, Yankee prospects hyped up to immeasurable degrees, only for reality to set in that they may have not been as much of a sure thing as advertised (see Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Rob Refsnyder, Greg Bird, Clint Frazier, etc.). BT is worried these new Baby Bombers will fall into those categories as well.

“We talk about the young Yankee players, and I gotta be honest, I think there’s a lot of exaggeration in terms of who they’re gonna be,” BT said. “I watch them every night. I don’t see any power. I don’t see any real thump.

“I’m not saying they’re useless. They have a place on this team…but I don’t see dynamic, young offensive players that the Braves are trotting out, or the Rays, or the Orioles.”
