BT has been very vocal in his belief that the Yankees need to move on from Aaron Boone, but who would he want to bring in to replace the current manager?
BT admittedly hasn’t given the replacement a ton of thought yet, focusing more on moving on from Boone first, but he says he wouldn’t mind bringing back the skipper that Boone originally replaced.
“I’d be open to bringing [Joe] Girardi back,” BT said. “The way it ended with Joe here, a little growth, a little self-awareness, maybe Joe comes back, and whatever he needed to work on, he worked on.”
Girardi, who won the Yankees’ last World Series in his second year as manager, game one game short of another World Series berth before he was let go in favor of Boone after the 2017 season, as the front office seemed keen on prioritizing communication with the players, which they felt Boone would excel at.
“Joe got the short end of the stick,” BT said. “Those teams were always prepared and they always played hard. So he was a little tough on players. You know what? I’d like to see that rather than the Yankees getting a pass every night by Aaron Boone.”
Sal pointed out Girardi being fired by the Phillies midseason of last year, only for his replacement Rob Thomson to lead the Phils to an improbable World Series berth. But that doesn’t necessarily make Girardi undesirable for BT.
“Is there a perfect person out there? I don’t know if there is,” BT said. “If everyone is in some way inherently flawed, taking a chance on a guy who won here and knows the media and I think, fundamentally, is a good manager, I’d take him over Boone at this point.”
