As the Juan Soto sweepstakes could be nearing an end within a week as the Winter Meetings approach, Brandon Tierney has very real concerns about the Yankees losing the free agent superstar to their greatest rival.
And no, that is not the Mets.
“The Red Sox are real here,” BT said. “When you look at their presentation, Big Papi is of Dominican descent, Pedro is of Dominican descent, Rafael Devers is of Dominican descent, and Juan Soto is obviously a proud Dominican as well.
“He wants to get paid, and the Red Sox are in the equation in terms of money. He has some countrymen that he grew up idolizing that are selling him on the strength and virtue of the franchise. You’ve got Devers, who is a pretty good player...and he got a fairly comprehensive rundown of the Red Sox system. He wants to know that stuff.”
Soto reportedly showed an interest in organizations’ player development systems when meeting with interested teams last month, and Boston has a healthy farm system as they have continued their rebuild. BT believes Soto’s heritage, and the ties to former and current Boston greats, could play a role, and most importantly, the short trip to the Green Monster in left field and the short right field corner, where home runs can come on balls that travel less than 300 feet.
“You look at the configuration of the ballpark...if I’m Juan Soto, where do I think I’m gonna have the greatest success as a hitter? It’s Fenway,” BT said.
“I think Juan Soto is more intrigued by the Red Sox than the Mets.”
