BT: Would modern athlete even be mad about teammate turning down Opening Day start?

BT and Sal weren’t happy with Marcus Stroman’s decision to decline the ball on Opening Day for the Yankees, but BT doesn’t believe many in the Yankee clubhouse would agree with their frustration.

“I don’t think the modern player really has an issue with this. I don’t,” BT said. “I think for some in the locker room, it’s not a great look, but I think everyone on the pitching staff understands. I think they’re going, ‘Hey, I’m as routine-oriented as he is. I get it.’”

Sal believes Aaron Judge wouldn’t love to hear one of his own declining to pitch Opening Day in place of an injured Gerrit Cole, and wonders if a workhorse like Cole himself would take issue with the decision. BT could get behind Cole being frustrated given his makeup, but overall, he doesn’t think Stroman will draw the ire of many in the clubhouse for not answering the bell.

“Sadly,” BT said. “I don’t think he will harbor a lot of resentment from his teammates for not taking the baseball.”
