BT says Yankees rotation best he's ever seen in the Bronx, but Sal fears regression
Sal asked BT if he believed the current production from the Yankees starting rotation was sustainable through 2024, and BT made it clear that he has all the confidence in the world in a rotation that he says is the best he’s ever seen in the Bronx.
“This rotation is the best I’ve ever seen for the Yankees,” BT said. “Luis Gil has been untouchable. Carlos Rodon is basically your fourth-best pitcher right now, and he’s been really good.”
The Yankees have the second-best ERA by starters this season, trailing only the Phillies in that regard, all while their ace in Gerrit Cole has yet to throw a pitch. The 1998 and 1999 Yankees could qualify for the best rotation of BT’s lifetime, as they both finished top five in the league in collective ERA before largely dominating in the playoffs. But BT came up as a fan during the 1980s, when pitching was consistently the team’s Achilles heel, much different than what is happening right now.
Still, despite the declaration from BT, Sal doesn’t believe the current rotation will be seen that way when it’s all said and done.
“Rodon, don’t trust him,” Sal said. “Stroman, look at his second half last year after he had an All-Star start. Gil, he’s been incredible. I love him since I first saw him years ago. The one problem is the fatigue. We just don’t know.
“Gerrit Cole coming back could help offset the potential drop-offs, but I’m still not sold. I still don’t trust Clay Holmes in a big spot in the postseason.”
