BT has been clear in his desire for the Yankees to trade Giancarlo Stanton this offseason, and on Wednesday, he reiterated his belief that a team would bite on a trade if the Bombers were willing to eat a chunk of Stanton’s salary.
“If the Yankees are eating a massive chunk of what the Marlins are not, you’re basically getting a guy who is gonna run into 30 home runs if he is healthy, for free,” BT said. “You entice with the prospects, maybe a [Gleyber] Torres, a [Clarke] Schmidt, or a [Michael] King. You just have to be forward thinking, something the Yankees haven’t been in a long time.”
To prove his point, BT did a role play exercise with Sal, who was posing as the Padres GM and BT posing as Brian Cashman, as they tried to execute a deal for Juan Soto where the Yanks send Stanton, sans his bloated salary, and prospects, perhaps even Jasson Dominguez, to San Diego.
“What if we include Stanton and eat $20 of the $32 million he is owed next season?” BT said, as Cashman.
“Is this a prank call? Come on, who is this?” Sal replied. “I thought this was Cash? You mean the guy who hit .191? No thank you…I thought I was clear when I said I wanted baseball players, guys who can actually run the bases.”
