C-Mac: Clay Holmes gets 'unfair' disrespect from Yankee fans
Clay Holmes shut the door on the Yankees’ comeback win against the Blue Jays in their series finale on Wednesday afternoon, allowing a hit in one scoreless inning to get New York back in the win column.
Holmes still hasn’t allowed an earned run in 2024, and C-Mac says the Yankees closer needs to get more respect.
“This is a guy who is dominant, and I will still hear from Yankee fans that they can’t win with him,” C-Mac said. “He’s come here, and since he’s been a Yankee, if you look at his numbers, Clay Holmes is as good as a reliever as there is in baseball. Right now, he has a 0.00 ERA in nine appearances. Has some of them been shaky? Has he needed good defense? Sure.”
Holmes has posted a 2.36 ERA in 163.2 innings of work in a Yankee uniform, and has already earned an All-Star appearance in pinstripes. Sure, many Yankee fans are used to the greatest of all time in Mariano Rivera, but C-Mac says Holmes should be more appreciated.
“If you look at his numbers, his ground ball rate is 73 percent,” C-Mac said. “It’s very hard to hit him in the air. He doesn’t give up home runs.
“Still, Yankee fans will tell me they can’t win with Clay Holmes as the closer, and they don’t trust him…I think it’s unfair.”
