C-Mac: Gleyber Torres once again proves he is 'not a winning player'

C-Mac says the Yankees need to continue playing Gleyber Torres, as there is no other alternative at this point, but he still ripped the veteran infielder for dogging it on a slow ground ball late in Tuesday’s Subway Series opener, when the Yankees were trying to mount a comeback.

“Gleyber Torres, this was test No. 1 with Stanton out of this lineup, and being protection for Aaron Judge…he’s been absolute trash right now,” C-Mac said. “The next month, they need him. Stanton is not coming back.

“That ball is a topped, slow rolling, ground ball to the shortstop. I understand we’ve seen Stanton not run on purpose to stay healthy…and they kind of need Gleyber to stay healthy…but here’s how you know that Gleyber Torres is a losing player.
He can tell you all he wants about being tight, and the manager can say that too. But that is instinct. When you top one and roll one over to shortstop, if your initial instinct isn’t ‘I smell a base hit,’ you are not a winning player.
Plain and simple.”

Torres told reporters after the game that his groin, which caused him to leave a game against the Orioles on Thursday, felt “very tight” in that at-bat, but C-Mac didn’t want to hear it. Not in that situation.

“I don’t care what your injury is. I don’t care how tight your muscles are,” C-Mac said. “Your instincts are immediately ‘I smell a hit,’ and Gleyber Torres moped…I’m sick of it, I can’t watch it anymore, but there are no better answers.”
