C-Mac: Juan Soto's free agency comment a scary reminder regardless of what it means
Juan Soto ripped an opposite-field home run on Tuesday night in Seattle, having now gone deep in every major league park after checking the last one off his list with that blast, his 40th of the season and 200th of his career.
After the game, Soto talked about the accomplishment of homering in every big-league park, telling reporters, “What a way to go into free agency, with all 30 ballparks checked on my list” (via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch).
Chris McMonigle is still very hopeful that Soto signs with the Yanks this offseason, but even he had to admit that the comment gave him a little worry.
“That just speaks to what everyone wants to tell you,” C-Mac said. “That he’s focused on his free agency and that he wants every last dollar, and free agency has been on his mind.
“Something about the idea that the answer to that question was ‘What better way to head into free agency,’ it’s just a reminder. A reminder that Juan Soto may be a Yankee right now, but they’ll have to pony up an enormous contract.”
Again, C-Mac still believes Soto will be a Yankee, but the comment was another scary reminder that nothing is set in stone yet, and there is still a chance that the young superstar signs elsewhere this offseason.
“I don’t think it’s fair to take any of that out of this comment, but it jumped out at me when I heard it. I have to admit,” C-Mac said. “I still believe there’s a number that the Yankees can give, even if someone offers higher, and Juan Soto will be a Yankee.
“It scares me. I have to admit.”
