C-Mac: Juan Soto to Mets would be far from worst-case scenario for Yankees
As Juan Soto meets with teams this week to begin his free agency sweepstakes, reports indicate that the Red Sox, Mets, Blue Jays, and Yankees are among the initial teams that will sit down with the superstar and make their pitches.
With the free agency craze underway, Yankee fans will begin sweating the prospect of losing Soto to a hated rival like the Mets and Steve Cohen’s deep pockets, but Chris McMonigle says any Yankee fan believing that Queens would be the most disastrous destination for Soto is way off the mark.
“The idea that the answer to that is anything other than the Boston Red Sox drives me up a wall,” C-Mac said. “Yeah, it could be the Blue Jays because they’re in the division…but I don’t believe in this Blue Jays team at all. I think they’re a bunch of frauds. They don’t scare me.
“The Boston Red Sox are the nemesis. There’s no way around it. They haven’t tried to compete in bringing in a Juan Soto type and spending big money in forever…the last thing I want to see is Juan Soto in a Boston Red Sox uniform.”
The Yankees/Red Sox rivalry has been more or less dormant in recent years, and Boston has, in many ways, retreated away from big-market spending, much to the frustration of its fanbase. But if they choose now to break that mold and sign Soto, adding him to a young roster that also includes a star in Rafael Devers, that would be big trouble for the Yanks.
“To say anything else…I know that Steve Cohen is gonna spend money. I know he hasn’t done it yet and hasn’t taken a player away from the Yankees, but we know he has more money and he’s gonna spend it…but I don’t want to see him in a Red Sox uniform,” C-Mac said. “To me, that’s an easy one.”
