As the trade deadline approaches, some fans want to see the Yankees move on from Gleyber Torres, having become fed up with his baserunning and fielding blunders, and his failure to replicate his offensive production from his first two big league seasons.
C-Mac has some bad news for that corner of the fanbase: the 2023 Yankees need Torres.
“Whatever you think of him, and as disappointed as we all may be in him, he’s too much of an important bat in the lineup to trade away,” C-Mac said. “You can’t rob Peter to pay Paul. To bring in a third baseman, you get rid of Gleyber? Than what do you do at second base?
“He’s hitting. I gotta give this team the best chance to win, and trading Gleyber Torres does not do that. whatever you think of him…he’s one of their best hitters right now.”
Torres has the third-highest WAR on the team among position players, behind only the injured Aaron Judge and rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe, while his 105 OPS+ is second on the team not including Judge, who is still out for the foreseeable future. With the Yanks desperate for offense, they can’t afford to lose an everyday player like Torres.
“He’s one of their more consistent hitters. He has the best numbers on the team by a lot with runners in scoring position,” C-Mac said. “He’s been overall pretty good. He’s having a decent season offensively. He’s made boneheaded decisions on the bases and in the field, and he’s a frustrating player…but they need him.”
