Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Wednesday night that the Yankees have reached back out to Jordan Montgomery after Blake Snell signed with the Giants and Michael Lorenzen with the Rangers.
While C-Mac isn’t buying the possibility, he does see there being more of a chance of a reunion with Montgomery than he ever did with the Yanks getting Blake Snell.
“I still don’t think there’s any chance the Yankees are signing Jordan Montgomery,” C-Mac said. “It has nothing to do with the idea that he does not want to come back to the Yankees. I think that ship has sailed. If the Yankees offer what he’s looking for, he’s coming back to the Yankees.
There’s no doubt in my mind.
“The question is, are the Yankees willing to go where he wants to go? The Yankees weren’t willing to go there with Blake Snell, even on a one-year deal.”
But, what makes Montgomery more of a possibility is the fact that the Yankees wouldn’t have to sacrifice a draft pick in compensation, and if Montgomery signed a longer-term deal, the salary for this season could be less than what a short-term deal would have been for Snell, meaning the 110 percent paid to the luxury tax wouldn’t be as robust.
“He’s looking for a long-term deal,” C-Mac said. “It’s less punitive than picks and money for international signing.”
