C-Mac: Yankee bullpen problems run much deeper than Clay Holmes

C-Mac has stood by Clay Holmes for much of the season, even as he endured a stretch of five blown saves in seven opportunities, and even after a shaky outing on Sunday, C-Mac says the Yankees’ series against the Rangers only highlighted that the team’s bullpen concerns run far deeper than just the closer.

“Tough day for the ‘Anyone but Clay crowd,’” C-Mac said of Saturday’s bullpen implosion, when both Luke Weaver and Michael Tonkin were knocked around by Texas after a strong performance from Gerrit Cole.

Weaver and Tonkin weren’t the only relievers to completely lose it over the weekend. New acquisition Mark Leiter Jr. was roughed up on Sunday, allowing two home runs, and Holmes barely got out of the ninth inning after allowing two walks and a single in the eventual 8-7 win.

“Those guys were horrible this weekend,” C-Mac said. “Worse than Clay. Home runs and blow-up innings.

“Right now, the Yankee bullpen is a scary proposition…that’s why you assume that one of these starting pitchers is being sent down to the bullpen.”

The trade deadline has passed, Scott Effross doesn’t seem close to a big-league return, and Jonathan Loaisiga is done for the year, so in terms of reinforcements, there likely aren’t any coming. The solutions will have to be internal.

“They’re gonna have to figure it out, because there are no arms coming,” C-Mac said. “I would think it would be Luis Gil or Clarke Schmidt…those are the options to help in the bullpen. The trade deadline has passed. This is the team.”
